Back again, after neglecting my blog! I should get an award for that, really.
Anyway, just wanted to get a quick little rant out of my system before I try working on reviews of The Hunger GamesĀ series and a few other stories I’m almost done with.
My last post was about having some hope restored. Hope that may have been a little too specific. The Hunger Games restored my hope in popular Youth fiction, and I let the joy from that completely shadow other areas that should have been full of concern: Adult fiction.
More specifically, this mess. Fifty Shades of Grey. A top selling erotic story that started as a TWILIGHT FAN FICTION. Yes, that needed caps. A damned sexy Twilight fan fiction published and being given so much attention it has a gigantic display at Walmart and has my coworkers shoving the book at me left and right. NO. Have literary standards really fallen so far?
Granted, I have not read this. I have no desire to. I’ve heard about the way it started, I’ve heard about the content, and nothing, absolutely nothing about this book draws me in.
I have no problem with erotic literature (and to be honest, have read some good ones, even ones that were fan fic), and I could even see past the origin of this book if I were interested. However…
Nothing about this sounds sexy, entertaining, or even remotely good. What is the appeal here? Boring, bland characters ripped from another author’s work tweaked to prevent a lawsuit having sex?
The general public just doesn’t see that because this is probably the first book they’ve touched in ages, and more likely than not the only erotic thing they’ve seen that wasn’t fully classified as porn.
Thanks for listening, and if you don’t like my view, remember, I’m not forcing you to agree with me. So please don’t try to make me agree with you.
OPTIMISTIC NOTE: If it’s this easy to get published now, all I should have to do is slam my hand on the keyboard a few times, throw some horribly written sex in there, and BAM! My name will be all over the place.
